But when done well, second person point of view can accomplish a range of wonderful effects. In the wrong hands, it just feels gimmicky. It’s used in experimental literature to try out new styles of writing. Second person point of view, which uses the pronoun you, is one of the least used POVs in literature because it places the reader in the hot seat and is hard to manage for a full-length novel. Jem and I found our father satisfactory: he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment.” Second Person Point of View “We lived on the main residential street in town-Atticus, Jem and I, plus Calpurnia our cook. She speaks with a childlike innocence, giving the reader that same feeling, even if we understand the racism of her town better than she does herself. It didn’t taste like anything, but it went straight down into my stomach like a sword swallowers’ sword and made me feel powerful and godlike.”Ĭompare that with the intimacy you get when reading Scout’s view of things in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. “I began to think vodka was my drink at last. The narrator is a flawed character, but we see the world entirely through her eyes, complete with her own faults and sorrows. One great example of first person POV is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. The limitations of first person point of view, however, restrict you to only describing what this character sees, thinks, and feels, and sometimes that narrator can be unreliable. It’s also the easiest way to tell a story that uses a distinct, quirky voice. The author uses the first person pronouns I and me to show readers what this character sees and thinks.įirst person is the best way to show the story from one person’s point of view because you have an individual person telling you her story directly in her own words. With first person point of view, everything is told intimately from the viewpoint of a character, usually your protagonist. Read on to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each of these points of view. Fourth person (“ We pet the cat because we think it looks cute.”).Little does she know, this cat is actually an alien in disguise.”) Third person limited (“ She pets the cat because she thinks it looks cute.”) and third person omniscient (“ She pets the cat because she thinks it looks cute.Second person (“ You pet the cat because you think it looks cute.”).First person (“ I pet the cat because I think it looks cute.”).There are four main points of view that we’ll be discussing in this article: first person, second person, third person (with two subtypes: limited and omniscient), and fourth person. Imagine that masterpiece with a different point of view-it wouldn’t have the same objective, reliable feeling that it has now. He decided it would be much more powerful coming from Nick’s more naïve point of view. Scott Fitzgerald had to rewrite The Great Gatsby because he initially wrote it in Gatsby’s voice. POV is a matter of choice, but one that affects every part of your story or novel.į. The right POV can also completely change the way the story feels. On the other hand, you also have to show the world with that character’s biases and flawed observations. In order to choose the right POV, you have to know what you want your story to accomplish.įor example, if you choose first person POV, you’ll be able to immerse the reader in a single character’s voice, humor, and worldview. It can have an enormous impact on the tone, style, and even plot of the story.Įach point of view has its own strengths and limitations. Point of view is one of the most important aspects of your story that you must decide before putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). You might even tell it from the perspective of an all-seeing entity, who can see into the minds of both the stranger and the townspeople, all at the same time.Įach of these options centers a different point of view-a different angle for the reader to approach the same story. You might tell it from the collective perspective of the townspeople, who are curious about who this stranger is and why he’s come to this part of the world. You might tell it from the perspective of the stranger who has never seen this town before and views all of its buildings and streets through fresh eyes. What are all the different perspectives you could tell this story from? Imagine you’re telling a story about a well-traveled stranger who enters a small, rural town. To understand point of view, try this quick exercise. Point of view refers to the perspective through which a story is told. What Is Point of View in Writing and Literature?

Many PDF metadata removal tools just play tricks: if you use the macOS Quartz Engine, it will just write different metadata if you use exiftool, the metadata will be left in a recoverable state, which could even increase the PDF size slightly if you use qpdf, it allegedly removes even this latent/recoverable metadata, but might leave it in, if that metadata is referenced somewhere else in the PDF. But even with the `-L` argument, mat2 is (to my knowledge) the only tool that will remove metadata for real, i.e. When you run `mat2 -L foo`, it will ensure a smaller filesize (via *actual* metadata removal), but it will retain embedded images, font, text layers etc. But you have to run mat2 without any arguments. So it does a *lot* more than just metadata removal. For the moment, Adobe Acrobat CC remains the only tool capable of reliable redaction of PDFs, and even there I have my doubts.Īfter your comment, I tested mat2 again, and I used a PDF with metadata, embedded fonts and a text layer (265 kB), and mat2 turned it into a flat PDF, no metadata, no fonts, no text layer (1.5 MB). Redact is only part of the solution – sanitize is the more difficult and more essential companion. I have written this before and will repeat it here: no redaction tool can be worth using unless the same app can scavenge PDFs for hidden content in the way that Acrobat’s Sanitize tool does. The visible letter fragments are a bit worrying, but its inability to redact the invisible text casts doubt on its use for anything in the slightest bit serious. Preview’s redaction tool actually does appear to do quite a good job, as far as it can see text in a PDF document. When examined in Acrobat’s Sanitize tool, it was able to recover the visible fragments of letters, and the whole of the hidden text. So has Preview removed that, or was it too fooled into leaving what it couldn’t see on the page? That invisible text is easily recovered from the PDF using Adobe Acrobat CC. However, my redaction test file contains a secret: the visible text actually extends further to the right, off the edge of the page. Save the file, though, and when it’s opened it does appear to have been fully redacted apart from a few fragments of letters at the right edge. More troubling, perhaps, is that when you place the pointer over the area of redaction, you can still see the text which has been “removed permanently”. Once text has been selected for redaction, it’s shown in black overprint with Xes, which is reassuring. When you first select the command, unless you’ve already disabled it, you’ll be warned that what you’re about to redact will be removed permanently. Once you’ve finished, visit the Tools menu and uncheck the command before you wipe anything else out: this isn’t a single-shot command, but a tool state. If you just want to select text, you can use the text selection cursor otherwise draw a box around the area and it will turn black. Open the document you want to redact, select the Redact command in the Tools menu, and outline the text and graphics which you wish to redact. And any user whose sensitive content has been left accessible in a redacted PDF will never forgive you. In short, no one should ever choose to develop a redaction tool for PDFs, as it’s a course to almost inevitable failure. Ensuring that all those objects have been properly redacted, and none leaks anything that could cause trouble, is an almost impossible task. Not only that, but they often contain objects from previous edits, some of which may still contain text which is invisible to the user. A typical PDF document consists of dozens or even thousands of objects containing snippets of text, each normally compressed and assembled in a complex tree. The PDF format was never designed for tasks such as redaction of content. This article looks at how thorough that is, and whether you can rely on it removing all access to sensitive content in your PDFs. I hadn’t noticed it before Big Sur, but Apple’s bundled Preview app can now redact PDF documents. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn piston rings, faulty PCV valves, and engine design flaws. One of the most common issues reported by Vibe owners is excessive oil consumption. Here are some of the most common problems faced by Pontiac Vibe owners: While the Vibe is generally a reliable car, these issues can be frustrating and expensive to repair. Pontiac Vibe owners have reported several common issues with their vehicles over the years. Its combination of fuel economy, cargo space, and versatility make it a great option for families, students, and anyone in need of a reliable hatchback. Some second-generation Vibe models also experienced excessive oil consumption, engine stalling, and ignition coil failure.ĭespite these issues, the Pontiac Vibe remains a popular choice among car buyers looking for a practical and reliable vehicle. These included oil consumption issues, engine misfires, water pump failure, hard shifting, and power window failure. While the Pontiac Vibe was generally a reliable vehicle, there were some common issues that owners reported. The Vibe also had a variety of storage compartments throughout the cabin, including a hidden storage compartment under the cargo floor. The rear seats could be folded down to create a flat load floor, which allowed for easy loading and transport of large items. One of the unique features of the Pontiac Vibe was its cargo space. Both engines were paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. It was offered with two engine options: a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 126 horsepower and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 158 horsepower. The Pontiac Vibe was available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. But, there would have been an open seven if you had not earlier moved the six of hearts onto the seven of hearts. Situations such as this can very often make the difference between a win or loss. Sadly, in very many (or most) instances, the player fails to even notice that they committed a grave error.Īn open card is one that is visible and has no other card atop it. Unless the card is an ace, at least one more card can be placed atop of it. Thus, an open card that is not an ace should be viewed as an asset or resource that, once used, is gone. When a card is placed atop of an unused card, it is no longer called unused but is called used. The idea is to use a card (by placing another card atop of it) in a manner that best increases your chance of victory. In other words, don't use a valuable resource until you have to but don't be afraid to use it when you feel that it's in your best interest to do so. When a column is vacated, it provides an area to temporarily place cards while transferring them from one column to another. When a column becomes empty, look for ways that you can use it to move cards between the columns in an advantageous way. However, even when such a situation is found, it might not be in your best interest to do so immediately (or at all). Study the game state to be sure and make the moves when you either have to because you are about to close the column (put cards into it that cannot be removed) or when it's to your best advantage. Making good use of vacant columns is a crucial skill if one wants to win many Spider Solitaire games. Most seem to believe that a king should never be placed into the only empty column but only extracted when more than one column is clear.Īs a general rule, this might be good advice, but not always. There are times where kings are jamming up so many columns that if something isn't down very soon, a sure loss is in hand. In these cases, it might be a good idea to extract a king into the only clear column, since if not, you most certainly will lose anyways. It's often an act of desperation, offer backfires, but does sometimes pays off with a win. It can cause asthma attacks and allergies and some rare cases of cancer. When using plastic such as Polyethylene, it produces formaldehyde and is a noxious VOC and known carcinogen. Most laser systems these days will be supplied with or have their own proprietary fume extraction system. Because these gases are toxic and could spread quickly, these fumes must be removed. Whether the application is cutting, engraving, or marking, the laser catalyses the material, and volatile organic compound (VOC) gases are formed as the material melts or burns. LGACs commonly fall into two categories: particles and gases. These fumes are known collectively as Laser Generated Air Contaminants (LGACs). Laser Engraving and Marking: Large industrial lasers can also generate harmful fumes when using several materials in the manufacturing process. Would you really want to be breathing all this? Additionally, to these particles, solder smoke can contain isocyanates, aldehydes, and other nasty substances. Lead-free soldering produces up to 250% more particles between 0.5-1 micron in diameter, the size which is most dangerous to inhale. Whilst it is better for the environment, it is much worse for the operator. Sometimes there can be a big misconception that lead-free solder is a much healthier eco-friendly option for soldering, but as stated before it is completely the opposite despite having no lead. The temperature needed to create a good solder joint using lead-free solder is much higher, causing a stronger reaction to the flux, creating more solder smoke with a greater number of toxic particles. Soldering/Rework: Over the last 10 years or so, we have significantly been moving away from lead soldering and opting for friendlier lead-free soldering however, this creates more fumes. Types of applications that require fume extraction MEK/Acetone/Formaldehyde – chemical compositions should not be inhaled.Laser – etching and engraving can produce harmful VOC compounds.Lead-free alloys – flux fumes require ventilation.Soldering/Rework – applications can produce harmful particles and gases.Fume extraction is typically used in the following applications: After the filtration, all the toxic and dust particles are then trapped within the filter. A fume extractor is like an air filter that sucks in contaminated air within the environment and then returns the clean air which passes through a filter. Most companies will be under strict health and safety guidelines from their governing bodies to implement such systems. Fume extraction systems are a logical solution to this problem.įume extraction systems are used to filter and extract toxic particles and dust in the workplace. Those particles that are being generated pollute the air inside, leading to health and safety hazards, including human inhalation, and potentially damaging any expensive equipment. This guide to fume extraction systems will help you fully understand the benefits of fume extraction, the types of fume equipment, and the potential hazards of toxic particles in the working environment. Fume extraction in the workplace can often be an area that is overlooked, even in large production facilities where there is lots of air ventilation.
